We were blown away by the beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains from that first time we visited it some 20 years ago. It is our best area in South Africa and is the reason we now live here. Here are a few of our favourite Drakensberg moments.
Giants Castle
Giants Castle lies in the Central Drakensberg region of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. Giant’s Castle camp offering glorious views for hikers and mountain climbers. The area is steeped in superb rock art.
Rock art at Game Pass Shelter
What makes the rock art tour at Game Pass Shelter in the Kamberg such an authentic experience, is that the guide comes from the local Tendele Village. It might start out as a guided tour but as your relationship with the guide develops it becomes a conversation and things like football and future dreams get discussed giving tourists a rural insight into South Africa. The rock art is in superb condition and the clear spiritual significance of this site captures everyone who visits it.
Overnight hiking in the Drakensberg
Ever thought of sleeping under the stars or tent in the amazing Drakensberg mountains. This should be on your next to do list. Your experience and level of fitness will depend on what hike will suite you best. You will require personal gear, back packs, tents, sleeping bags and mats, equipment can be hired or you can bring your own.
Sleeping in a cave
One of the most popular and easiest-to-reach overnight caves in the Drakensberg is Sherman’s Cave. The path begins just below the Cathedral Peak Hotel and leads across the river and up the steep slopes towards a peak of the same name.
Sani Pass
It took 1 hour and 15 minutes of terrifying nerve-jangling ascent to complete the 9km. Both us, our relationship and our rental car will never quite be the same again.
Tugela Falls
If you are going to make good progress these sheer cliff faces need to be climbed. The South African solution is chain ladders. Metal ladders that hang vertically over the cliff face. ⠀
